On an ordinary door, colour is a detail. On a filomuro door, colour is the door. With no visible frame and no architrave, the painted surface is the only thing the eye sees, and the RAL code you pick decides whether the door disappears into the wall or becomes a graphic accent. Why colour matters more on a filomuro door

A classic door has a frame, an architrave and usually a natural contrast against the wall. The eye reads the outline, not the surface. On a filomuro door the whole outline disappears: the leaf sits flush with the wall (filo muro), the extruded aluminium frame is concealed, and the perimeter joint is just 2-3 mm. All that is left is the flat surface and its colour. If the door's RAL matches the wall, the door is lost completely; if it differs by a single step of tone, every centimetre of difference shows. That is why colour is not an aesthetic whim but the decision that defines whether the "continuous wall" effect succeeds.

Minimal vs Signature: where RAL comes in

The two models differ at exactly this step. Signature arrives ready-painted from the factory, with paint applied in a booth, cured under control and wear-resistant, in a RAL colour you choose. Minimal arrives unfinished and primed, and you paint the Minimal model on site, in the same shade as the wall, together with the final coat. If you want total control over tone and a uniform factory finish, Signature is the choice; if you need to match a decorative paint already on the walls exactly, Minimal can make sense. Recommended RAL families for invisible doors

Not every RAL code works on a large, flat surface that has to imitate a wall. In practice, four families cover almost every project. The table below compares them by visual effect and context, and the list that follows explains each in brief.

• Neutral whites (RAL 9010, 9016, 9003) are the safe and most common choice. RAL 9010 is a warm white, 9016 a cooler pure white, 9003 a very clean signal white. They reflect light and let the door melt into a white wall.
• Greige and warm beige (RAL 1013, 1015, 9001) bring warmth without leaving neutral territory. They work beautifully next to light wood and natural stone, in rooms with south light.
• Cool greys (RAL 7038, 7035, 7047) give an architectural feel, suited to contemporary spaces with concrete, steel or glass.
• Anthracite and statement colours (RAL 7016, 9005, 3005) turn the door from an invisible element into a deliberate accent. They work best when you paint the wall in the same shade too, for a monolithic block of colour.

Choosing by light and room size

The same RAL colour looks different in two rooms. In a small or north-facing room with cool light, a neutral white or greige opens the space and avoids a closed-in feel; an anthracite would make the walls seem closer. In a large room with abundant south light, you can afford darker or more saturated tones without the space feeling heavy. The practical rule: the smaller the room and the cooler the light, the lighter and more neutral the RAL should be. Always check the colour on a sample, on site, morning and evening, because warm artificial light shifts the look of a cool white.

Matte vs satin finish on the same RAL

The RAL code gives the colour, but the level of sheen completely changes how the surface reads. A matte finish absorbs light, hides small wall imperfections and reinforces the "continuous wall" effect; it is the preferred choice for total disappearance. A satin finish reflects gently, cleans more easily and stands up better to touch in traffic areas, but it highlights any unevenness. For bedrooms and living rooms we recommend matte or extra-matte; for kitchens, bathrooms and busy hallways, a light satin is more practical. Whatever the sheen, maintaining the painted surface is simple, with a soft cloth and a neutral detergent.

RAL on frame and wall: continuity or contrast

Because the aluminium frame is concealed, you have no visible frame to match; you only have the door surface against the wall. That gives two strategies. First, continuity: you paint the door and wall in exactly the same RAL, and the door disappears completely, ideal alongside a floor-to-ceiling door that reinforces the unbroken vertical line. Second, controlled contrast: you deliberately choose a different RAL, and the door becomes a graphic panel on the wall. Contrast works best with metallic accents on the handle (brass, satin steel) and a neutral background wall, so the door stays the hero.

Can I change the RAL colour of a Signature door after installation?

Yes, a filomuro door can be repainted like any flat surface, with proper preparation and compatible paint. Bear in mind, though, that the original factory finish is applied under control and is more durable than an on-site repaint. That is why it is worth choosing the right RAL code from the start, and keeping repainting as a solution for major design changes.

Which white RAL matches standard white walls?

It depends on the temperature of the white on the walls. For walls painted in a warm white, RAL 9010 blends in most naturally. For cool white or pure white walls, RAL 9016 is closer. The safest method is to compare a physical RAL sample with the wall paint, under the same light, before ordering.

Does the RAL colour increase the price of a filomuro door?

On the Signature model, painting in a standard RAL colour is included in the base price of 3,693 RON with VAT. Special, metallic or textured colours outside the classic RAL palette may carry an extra cost. If you want to avoid any surcharge, choose a standard RAL from the families recommended above.

How long does factory painting take compared with on-site painting?

On Signature, painting is done at the factory in parallel with door production, so it adds no time on your site and arrives fully finished.
