A filomuro flush door stays flat, gap-free and flawlessly finished for years only if maintenance respects the materials it is built from: an extruded aluminium perimeter frame, a concealed jamb and a painted surface. The guide below shows which products to use, which to avoid and at what interval, so the panel stays plane and the hinges work without play.

What makes filomuro maintenance different

An invisible door is not cared for like a classic door on a wooden frame. The panel sits flush with the wall, with a 3-4 mm perimeter reveal and concealed hinges that carry the full weight. The surface is usually painted on site or in the factory, so you treat the finish exactly like the surrounding wall. The load-bearing structure is an extruded aluminium frame, which does not swell in humidity like HDF, but the hinge mechanisms and the reveal need periodic attention.

In short: clean the finish gently, vacuum the reveal, and lubricate and adjust the hinges. Three zones, three different routines.

Cleaning the painted surface

The matte or satin painted finish is wiped with a slightly damp microfibre cloth and, for marks, with a pH-neutral solution (water with a few drops of dish soap). Never scrub with an abrasive sponge and never apply solvent-based products directly to the paint.

• Allowed: soft microfibre, lukewarm water, diluted neutral detergent, dry dusting cloth.
• Forbidden: acetone, thinner, concentrated alcohol, bleach, abrasive scouring pads, scouring powders.
• Hand marks or fingerprints: damp cloth with a drop of detergent, then dry immediately.
• Sticky residue (adhesive tape, stickers) is softened with warm water, never scraped with a nail or hard object.

The extruded aluminium jamb needs no painting or lacquering, but the channel the panel sits in collects dust and small finish residue. Vacuum the reveal monthly with a thin nozzle so the panel closes smoothly. The concealed hinges use bearings and pivots: every six months spray a little PTFE onto the articulation points, then move the door a few times so the lubricant penetrates. Avoid thick grease or heavy oil, which trap dust and gum up the mechanism.

Adjusting the hinges on three axes

If the door starts to rub against the jamb, touch the floor, or the reveal becomes uneven, filomuro hinges adjust on three axes (height, lateral and depth) with an Allen key. Slightly loosen the locking screw, correct the axis causing the rubbing by no more than half a turn, then tighten again. Correct adjustment at installation reduces later need; many problems actually come from installation mistakes that later show up as play or rubbing.

Maintenance in wet rooms: bathroom and kitchen

The extruded aluminium frame does not warp in humidity, which is a real advantage in the bathroom and kitchen. Still, the painted finish needs attention: ventilate the room after a shower, wipe condensation off the surface and do not let water sit in the bottom reveal. In the kitchen, grease marks are cleaned promptly with neutral detergent before they harden. A well-maintained filomuro door keeps its flatness far beyond the life of a classic leaf, which matters in the long-term calculation against a classic door.

Maintenance mistakes that ruin the finish

• Solvent straight onto the paint: acetone and thinner lift the finish film and leave matte patches.
• Abrasive sponges: scratch the satin surface and show under raking light.
• Excess water in the reveal: standing water can swell the lower part of the panel.
• Thick grease on hinges: traps dust and blocks fine adjustment.
• Forced adjustment of more than half a turn at once: unbalances the panel.

What do I clean a white filomuro door with so it leaves no marks?

Use a microfibre cloth lightly dampened with water and a drop of neutral detergent, then wipe immediately with a dry microfibre. Moving in one direction, not circular, avoids streaks. For fingerprints, plain water with a dry wipe is enough.

Can I use alcohol or acetone solutions on a filomuro door?

No. Acetone, thinner and concentrated alcohol attack the paint film and leave matte or discoloured areas. For stubborn marks, soften with warm water and neutral detergent, never with solvent.

How often should the concealed hinges be lubricated?

Every six months, with a Teflon-based (PTFE) spray applied precisely to the articulations. After applying, move the door a few times. Do not use thick grease or viscous oil, because they trap dust and gum up the mechanism.
