Definition: the filomuro door

Filomuro (from Italian: filo = flush/level, muro = wall) is a type of interior door that integrates seamlessly into the wall surface. When closed, the filomuro door becomes virtually invisible — no visible frame, no architraves, no interruptions in the wall line.

Unlike a standard door, where the frame protrudes 2–3 cm from the wall and architraves surround the opening, a filomuro door has its frame embedded within the wall structure. The result is a continuous surface that delivers a minimal, contemporary look.

How does a flush invisible door with a hidden frame work?

The principle is simple: the aluminium frame is installed in the wall opening before the wall finishes are applied. Plaster, paint, or wallpaper is then applied both to the wall and to the door surface, so the two become a single visual surface.

The technical elements that make this effect possible:

• Hidden aluminium frame — fully embedded within the wall structure
• Concealed 3D-adjustable hinges — invisible when the door is closed, allowing 180° opening
• Magnetic lock — no visible handle on the outside (optional); the door opens by push-to-open or with a minimal handle
• Perimeter frame — onto which the same finish as the wall is applied

What materials is it made of?

Most filomuro doors on the Romanian market have an aluminium frame and surround — just like ours. The essential difference lies in the door core: mineral wool vs. honeycomb cardboard. This distinction determines sound insulation, fire resistance, and the feeling of solidity to the touch.

The filomuro door is extremely versatile in terms of finish. The door surface can be:

• Unfinished — ready to be painted or wallpapered on site, identical to the wall (complete invisibility effect)
• RAL painted — any colour from the RAL palette, factory-applied with a matt or gloss lacquer
• Natural wood veneer — oak, walnut, ash
• Painted MDF
• Glass
• Wallpaper-ready surface

When should installation be planned?

This is the most important point to remember: a filomuro door cannot be installed on an already-finished wall. The frame must be embedded within the wall structure before any finishes (plaster, paint, wallpaper) are applied.

This is why filomuro doors need to be planned during the:

• New build phase — at the architectural design stage
• Renovation phase — before the walls are re-finished

If the walls are already finished, installation is still possible, but it requires partial re-finishing of the wall in the frame area.
