Materials and tools you need

Before you start, lay everything out within reach so you do not interrupt the coats:

• Water-based primer for MDF and drywall, to even out absorption between panel and wall
• Washable or water-based acrylic paint, in a matte or satin finish (see the table below)
• Short-pile microfibre roller, 4-5 mm, for smooth surfaces (minimal texture)
• Fine 3-4 cm brush for edges and the area around the handle
• 220-240 grit sandpaper for light sanding between coats
• Masking tape for hinges, handle and the edge of the aluminium frame
• Fine finishing filler, only if small imperfections appear on the panel

The extruded aluminium frame should not be painted directly until it has been coated with a metal-specific primer; otherwise acrylic paint will not bond to aluminium.

Which type of paint to choose

The painting steps, in order

2. Mask off. Tape the hinges, the handle recess and the aluminium edge if it stays visible.
3. Prime. Apply one coat of primer to the panel and the adjacent wall in the same pass. Let it dry 4-6 hours.
4. Sand lightly. With 220-240 grit, go gently over the panel to break the primer's sheen. Wipe off the dust.
5. First coat of paint. Apply with the microfibre roller in even vertical strokes, without overloading. A thin coat dries evenly and avoids "orange peel".
6. Let it dry and sand again. 4-6 hours between coats (check the paint data sheet). Very light sanding only if you feel grain.
7. Second coat. Apply perpendicular to the first coat for full coverage. Deep colours may need a third coat.

Mistakes that ruin the invisible effect

Most filomuro doors that "show" do not have a manufacturing problem, but a finishing one. Avoid these four mistakes:

• Skipping the primer: MDF absorbs unevenly and the paint blotches.
• Too thick a coat at once: runs and orange-peel texture appear.
• Long-pile roller: leaves a more pronounced texture on the door than on the wall, and the difference shows in raking light.
• Painting the door with a different product than the wall: the door reflects light differently and "appears".

What is the best paint for an invisible door?
