Wall Thickness for a Filomuro Door: 100 mm Minimum

Before the opening size and before the colour, a filomuro door order most often stalls on a single number: wall thickness. The concealed frame is not applied over the wall, it sits inside it, and if the wall is too thin no adjustment can compensate. Below you get the minimum threshold, the depths ordered as standard and what to do in the two edge cases, a wall that is too thin and a wall that is too thick.

Why the wall decides whether filomuro can be installed

On a conventional door, the frame wraps the wall on both faces and hides any thickness difference under the architrave. Tolerance is generous: a 200 mm frame covers a 150 mm wall without anyone noticing. With filomuro the logic is reversed. The extruded aluminium frame is buried in the wall thickness and stays there, while plaster runs over it up to the edge of the inner bead. The wall no longer masks the frame, it hosts it.

The practical consequence is that frame depth must match finished wall thickness exactly, not approximately. A frame shorter than the wall leaves a step of a few millimetres inside the opening, visible in raking light. A frame longer than the wall protrudes from the wall plane and ruins the very effect the system is bought for.

How the thickness splits: 75 mm profile plus 30 mm per face

The standard filomuro frame profile measures 75 mm across the wall thickness. To that you add the 30 mm inner bead on each face, the zone that takes filler and paint so the finish runs continuously from wall to frame. The sum gives the absolute threshold below which the system does not work: 100 mm net finished wall.

The word "finished" causes most ordering errors. The figure that matters is not the bare masonry thickness but the wall thickness after plaster, filler and any lining. A 115 mm brick wall with 10 mm plaster on each face reaches 135 mm finished, and the frame is ordered at 135, not 115. The same rule applies to drywall, where boards add 12.5 or 25 mm per side over the metal stud.

Depths produced as standard are 100, 125 and 150 mm, and beyond those we work to order up to 250 mm. All are cut to the figure supplied together with the opening size and the handing, which is why the frame goes into the wall before plastering, not at the end of the build.

Minimum thickness by wall type

The table covers what you find in more than nine out of ten apartments and houses. The "finished thickness" column assumes ordinary finishing: 10-12 mm plaster and filler per face on masonry, plasterboard on stud walls.

Read as prose, the table says three things:

One detail matters on the 125 mm brick wall: that is also where you reach the best acoustic performance in the table, because a 125 mm masonry wall reaches 42-45 dB, and a door with a mineral wool core does not drag the assembly down sharply.

AAC block of 75 mm: the only case that blocks installation

Partition walls in 75 mm aerated concrete are common in apartments built after 2010, separating the bathroom or a dressing room. With plaster and filler on both faces they reach 95-100 mm, exactly at the system's lower limit. In practice the 30 mm inner bead has nothing to bear on along one face, and the finish cracks at the first seasonal cycle.

The fix is thickening the wall, not forcing the frame. Plasterboard is applied on one or both faces, on its own metal frame or bonded, up to 125 mm finished. The cost is small relative to the door, a few hundred lei per wall, but it must be decided before ordering because it also changes the opening size. AAC of 100 mm does not raise the issue: with finishes it reaches 120-125 mm and falls straight into a stock depth.

Drywall: you set the thickness, not the existing wall

On stud walls the situation is the reverse of masonry, because finished thickness is not an inherited constraint but a design decision. Vertical profiles determine the structure depth, and boarding adds the rest. UA 75 with single boarding gives 100 mm finished, exactly the minimum threshold. UA 75 with double boarding gives 125 mm, and UA 100 with double boarding reaches 150 mm.

The practical recommendation is double boarding even when the wall does not need it structurally. The extra 25 mm per face give the frame far more stable support and absorb the drylining contractor's execution tolerances. The structure around the opening has to be stiffened with UA profiles and a header anyway, and there the cost difference between single and double boarding is negligible against the result.

The golden rule on drywall: finished wall width must equal the ordered frame depth, measured after boarding, not on the bare structure. It is one of the common installation mistakes discovered only once the frame is already on site.

Walls over 250 mm: the frame covers only part

Load-bearing walls of 250 mm or insulated facades exceed the frame's 250 mm maximum depth. There is no technical problem here, only a detailing decision: the frame is ordered at the maximum useful depth and the difference stays as a normally finished reveal, as on any door. The flush effect is kept on the face where the door is mounted, and the other face becomes a square-edged recess.

Choosing the face matters. The frame sits flush with the wall in the room where you want the continuous surface, usually the living room or hallway, and the reveal faces the secondary room. The detail goes into the drawing before ordering, together with the handing.

How to measure the real thickness before ordering

Correct measurement is taken on the bare wall, to which you add the planned finish thicknesses. If plaster is already applied, measure directly in the existing opening, tape perpendicular to the wall, at three points: top, middle and bottom. Differences greater than 5 mm between the three readings indicate a wall that is out of plane and must be corrected before installation.

Check plumb as well, with a straightedge or a laser level. Accepted deviation is under 3 mm per linear metre. Above that, the frame is installed plumb but the wall stays skewed around it, and the perimeter reveal comes out uneven.

The last thing to prepare before ordering is service positions. Sockets and switches move to at least 100 mm from the frame edge, 150 mm recommended, and cables route around the concealed profile. All these figures go into the order sheet together with the technical specifications for designers.

Can I install a filomuro door on a 75 mm AAC wall?

No, unless it is lined with plasterboard on one or both faces. The standard frame has a 75 mm profile plus a 30 mm inner bead on each face, so it needs at least 100 mm net wall. A 75 mm AAC wall with finishes reaches 95-100 mm, right at the limit. AAC of 100 mm does not raise the issue.

Does wall thickness change the price of a filomuro door?

Not between 100 and 150 mm, because those are the stock depths. Above 150 mm the profile is cut to order and a price difference appears on the frame, not on the leaf. The models stay the same: Filomuro Minimal from 2,796 RON incl. VAT and Signature from 3,693 RON incl. VAT.

What if I ordered the frame with the wrong depth?

It depends which way. If the frame is shorter than the wall, the difference can be recovered by lining the opposite face, provided it is under 20 mm. If the frame is longer, there is no site remedy, because the profile cannot be trimmed across its thickness without losing the finishing bead. That is why the figure is confirmed before production starts.

How do I measure thickness if plaster is not applied yet?

Measure the bare wall and add the finish thicknesses agreed with the builder: typically 10-12 mm plaster plus 2-3 mm filler per face on masonry, or 12.5 to 25 mm of boarding per side on drywall. The resulting figure is the order dimension. If the finish is not yet decided, order to the most likely option and lock the decision in writing with the site team.
