Filomuro for architects: technical specification guide

A filomuro door is not bought off the shelf. It is drawn into the plan, tied into the finish detail, and delivered at the actual opening size measured after screed. This guide is for architects who want to specify filomuro correctly in the technical brief, with no surprises at handover: standard dimensions, tolerances, anchorage, integration with drywall or masonry, details for wallpaper, panelling and murals, the data sheet to send to the manufacturer.

What a filomuro door actually is

Filomuro means "flush with the wall" in Italian. The system has three structural components that enter the plan separately:

• The concealed frame in extruded aluminium (profile 75–100 mm wall thickness + 30 mm interior bead), pre-painted in white or RAL on request.
• The door panel with an extruded aluminium perimeter frame and a sandwich core (HDF + mineral wool or honeycomb, depending on acoustic requirements).
• Anuba hinges with 3-axis adjustment (X-Y-Z), 60–80 kg/hinge capacity, integrated into the frame profile.

The difference from a classic door: there is no visible casing, the wall and the panel align in the same plane, the reveal is plastered up to the aluminium profile. This requires CAD coordination with the drywaller, plasterer and electrician.

Standard and custom dimensions

For filomuro Minimal and Signature (Kulttur production, Bucharest), plan-ready sizes are:

Recommended single-leaf maximum height is 2700 mm. Above that, switch to a double leaf or pivot door with central hinge (requires structural recalculation).

Tolerances and site measurements

The manufacturer produces to the nominal opening dimension. Plaster and drywall add deviations of ±5–8 mm on a straight wall and up to ±15 mm at corners. Firm rules:

• The order is confirmed after the screed is poured and the floor is finished (or with the finished floor level explicitly stated in the plan).
• Measured opening = width + 70 mm, height + 40 mm (foaming clearance).
• Vertical wall plumb under 3 mm/m. Above that, remedy is required before installation.
• Wall depth (thickness + finish) must be stated in the order: standard 100, 125, 150 mm. Custom up to 250 mm.

CAD details: drywall vs masonry

Filomuro works on both substrates, but the detail changes.

On double-layer drywall (12.5 + 12.5 mm): the aluminium frame attaches to a UW track reinforced with timber on the two studs adjacent to the opening. Typical total wall depth: 125 mm. Low-expansion PU foam between the frame and the structure.

On load-bearing masonry or AAC: the frame is anchored with metal angle brackets + chemical anchors every 50 cm vertically, minimum 3 anchors per jamb. Expanding foam around the perimeter, plaster onto the aluminium profile up to the inner bead edge. Typical wall depth: 150–200 mm.

Coordination with other trades on site

Filomuro is never installed in isolation. Three critical interfaces with other trades must be clarified on plan before ordering:

• With the drywaller: the filomuro frame is delivered after the metal structure is up but before the final boarding. The drywaller must leave a nominal opening 70 mm wider and 40 mm taller than the ordered panel, with aluminium studs timber-reinforced vertically.
• With the electrician: sockets and switches must be at least 100 mm from the frame edge (150 mm recommended). Cables cross the wall through the space above the frame or beside it, never through the concealed profile.
• With the plasterer: plaster is applied to the already-installed frame, up to the aluminium inner bead. The plasterer needs masking tape on the profile to avoid soiling. Corner mesh reinforcement is mandatory.

The typical mistake: the filomuro installer comes after the drywall has been painted. In that case, installation requires removing the perimeter finish, with extra costs and risk of cracks when repainting.

Acoustic and thermal performance

Standard filomuro with HDF + honeycomb core reaches Rw 26–28 dB. For real acoustic insulation in bedrooms or offices, the variant with mineral wool core 32 kg/m³ is required, climbing to Rw 35–38 dB. The difference is easily perceptible: with honeycomb, clear conversation is heard through the closed door; with mineral wool, only fragments. The magnetic floor threshold adds another 2–3 dB.

Thermally, filomuro is not used as an exterior door. Average U coefficient 2.1 W/m²K. To separate climate-controlled zones (cold/warm rooms), a variant with double gasket on the frame and optionally a magnetic strip on the height is required.

Finish integration: wallpaper, panelling, murals

The filomuro panel has a smooth face, ready for finishing. Three common scenarios:

• Paint on site (Minimal): the painter applies the same coats to the panel as to the wall. The aluminium profile stays metallic or is painted with primer for adhesion.
• Wallpaper: paper runs continuously over panel and wall with one sheet. Seam lines align on the hidden edge of the panel. No visible gap when the door is closed.
• Panelling, mural, 3D finish: the panel is ordered thicker (Signature with 5 mm allowance) and the panelling is applied directly to it. Horizontal wall tolerance: max 2 mm.

For murals and large-pattern wallpapers, the order must be placed before applying the wallpaper, so that the 3 mm gap between panel and wall is compensated by continuous pattern.

What the technical brief must contain

Minimum list manufacturers require for a firm quote:

• Plan with the position of each door, dimensioned from the structural axis
• Swing direction (left/right, push/pull) — EN 13125 convention
• Nominal opening × finished wall depth
• Core type: standard (HDF + honeycomb) or acoustic (HDF + mineral wool 32 kg/m³)
• RAL code for panel + frame (or "unfinished for site painting")
• Handle type: with lock or manual pull, finish (matt black, brass, stainless)
• Hinges: standard 2 pcs or reinforced 3 pcs for doors over 2400 mm
• Accessories: magnetic floor threshold (recommended for kitchens), auto-close with hydraulic pump (optional)

Four mistakes to avoid in the specification

1. Rough wall dimension instead of finished: the architectural plan must specify the finished wall dimension (plastered, skimmed), not rough. A 15–20 mm difference is enough to produce a door that won't fit or one with a visible gap.
2. Missing finished floor level: if the final floor level is not explicitly stated, the manufacturer assumes 12 mm parquet or tile. On polished concrete or 20 mm ceramic tile, the door will scrape or leave a large gap.
3. Ambiguous swing direction: "right" and "left" are reversed seen from inside vs outside. Use the EN 13125 convention (DIN 107 for German market) and state explicitly which side the door is viewed from.
4. Unspecified RAL: "white" is a shade, not a specification. Production uses RAL 9003 (signal white) as standard, but if walls are painted in NCS S 0500-N or Farrow & Ball "All White", the colour difference is visible. Specify the exact paint code for the walls.

What is the minimum plaster coverage over the filomuro profile?

3 mm over the inner frame bead, up to the panel face. Below 3 mm, the finish cracks on the first seasonal cycle. Above 5 mm, the flush alignment is lost and the door appears dressed in a thin frame.

Can I fit filomuro on a 7.5 cm AAC partition wall?

No, unless it is doubled with drywall on both faces. The standard filomuro frame is 75 mm profile thickness plus 30 mm interior bead each side, so 100 mm minimum net wall. AAC 7.5 cm + finishes reaches 95–100 mm, which is borderline. AAC 10 cm is safe.

How is the CAD detail delivered to the manufacturer?

In DWG or PDF format, scale 1:5 or 1:10, with vertical section (sill-floor, head-ceiling) and horizontal (wall-frame). Serious manufacturers return an execution detail for confirmation before production. For Kulttur Filomuro, the CAD file is requested at office@kulttur.ro after dimension validation.

How many days from order to delivery?

Made-to-order production takes 25–35 working days for Minimal and Signature. For custom dimensions over 2400 mm or RAL outside the standard palette, add 7–10 days. Installation requires a separate slot, usually 7–14 days after delivery, with the doors left on site at constant temperature for at least 48 hours.

What happens if the measured opening after screed differs from the plan?

If the difference is under ±10 mm, installation absorbs it through foaming. Above that, either the opening must be rectified by adjusting the masonry, or a new order is placed (production from scratch). That is why on-site measurement before ordering is mandatory, not optional.
