Pipes and wiring in a filomuro door wall: clearances

On a conventional door, the frame sits over the wall and forgives almost any hidden run. With filomuro the logic reverses: the extruded aluminium frame goes into the wall thickness and grips it with anchors that penetrate 60-80 mm into the material, every 50 cm vertically. Anything inside that volume will be found by the drill. Below is the zone that must stay clear, the clearance for each type of service, and the three checks to run before you place the order.

The anchor zone is a no-go zone

A filomuro frame does not rest on the wall, it anchors into it. Each vertical jamb takes at least three anchors spaced roughly 50 cm apart, and on masonry those are chemical anchors or steel brackets reaching 60-80 mm into the material. Add the 75 mm frame profile plus the 30 mm border on each face and you get a continuous volume, all around the opening, where nothing else can live.

The difference from an ordinary door is that here you have no correction margin. On a conventional frame, if you hit a back box you shift the anchor by 10 cm and the architrave covers it. Filomuro has no architrave and no "a bit further along": anchor positions are dictated by the extrusion geometry, and the finish runs continuously from wall onto frame. A box protruding into the structural opening can only be solved by breaking the wall and rerouting.

That is why coordination with the electrician and the plumber belongs in the same conversation as the finished wall thickness, not after the wall is up. Both are drawing-board decisions, not site decisions.

Minimum clearances by type of service

The values below are measured from the edge of the structural opening, meaning the panel plus 70 mm in width and 40 mm in height, not from the visible edge of the finished door. These are design clearances, not theoretical limits: below them installation stays possible, but the risk of having to open the wall rises sharply.

If you want one number to remember on site, it is 250 mm clear all around the opening. It covers electrical services, plumbing and the margin of error in setting out. The rest of the table only becomes useful when the wall is tight and every centimetre has to be negotiated.

Electrical runs: where the cables actually go

In a typical apartment the room switch sits 10-15 cm from the door frame, 90-105 cm above the floor. That is precisely the position that clashes with filomuro anchors. The answer is not to drop the switch but to move it: either onto the perpendicular wall, 20-30 cm from the corner, or onto the same wall but at least 150 mm from the edge of the opening.

To feed it, the cable rises vertically from the box to the horizontal run below the ceiling and passes over the lintel. Not through the lintel and not alongside the frame jamb. On floor-to-ceiling doors, where there is no lintel left, the horizontal run moves entirely onto the neighbouring wall or drops into the screed.

LED strips and lighting profiles framing the door demand the same discipline. They can be done, they are done routinely in commercial spaces, but their supply skirts the outline of the opening and enters from the side, past the last anchor. That detail gets drawn, not improvised on the spot.

Water, waste and heating: why these are worse

An electrical mistake shows up immediately: the breaker trips at first energising and the run is redone while the wall is still open. A pipe grazed by a chemical anchor behaves differently. The crack is hairline, water migrates into the plaster for months, and the first sign is a damp patch beside the frame, long after the door has been painted and signed off.

The consequence on filomuro is more severe than on a conventional door, because the moisture reaches straight into the contact zone between extrusion and masonry. The aluminium frame does not swell, but the mortar around it loses adhesion and the perimeter reveal starts to move. Repair means taking the frame out completely.

Waste pipes have a different problem: not proximity, but space. A Ø110 mm pipe needs a wall thicker than the 100 mm finished minimum the filomuro system requires. The two do not fit in the same wall regardless of horizontal distance, and trying to combine them yields either a locally thickened wall, visible in raking light, or a door that cannot be installed.

Drywall or masonry: how the rules change

The substrate does not change the clearances, it changes what can be corrected and at what cost. On drywall versus load-bearing masonry, the logic of intervention is completely different.

In plasterboard, the runs stay visible until the last moment: while the wall is unboarded you can see every conduit and every box and move them in minutes. That advantage vanishes the instant boarding goes on, because a later correction means stripping boards across the full width of the wall, not just locally. On top of that, the structure around the opening is already doubled with reinforced UA studs, and those occupy exactly the space an electrician would use for vertical runs.

In masonry, runs are chased into the material and covered with mortar. After plastering they become invisible, but they stay relatively easy to redo locally: cut a strip, shift the conduit, make good. The cost is in the hundreds of euros, not the thousands. The real risk on masonry is a different one: the installer chases after the bricklayer has left the opening, without knowing the frame dimensions, and runs the conduit right up the line of the future anchors.

Three checks before you place the order

You need no special equipment, you need three things done in the right order.

What to do when the service is already in the wall

This is common in renovations, where the wall exists and the runs were made twenty years ago without a drawing. You have three options, in order of cost.

The first is diverting the run. You open locally, skirt the opening outline with new conduit and make good. For an electrical circuit that means 40-100 EUR and a day's work; for a water riser, 120-235 EUR and two days, with the water shut off for the whole stack if it is a shared riser.

The second is moving the opening. Where the wall allows it, shifting the door 20-30 cm sideways resolves the conflict without touching the service. It costs only masonry and plaster, but it changes the geometry of the room and is accepted at project level, not decided by the fitter.

The third, used when the soil stack falls exactly on the desired axis, is dropping filomuro for that opening and treating it separately. That is a legitimate call: not every door in a home has to be invisible, and a shared stack in an apartment block does not move. Can a socket be fitted on the filomuro door panel itself?

No. The panel has an extruded aluminium perimeter frame and a sandwich core, and any cut-out for a back box breaks its rigidity and makes it warp over time. Feeding it would also require flexible cable through the hinge, which is not justified on an interior door. Sockets and switches belong on the wall, at least 150 mm from the edge of the opening.

How do I find where pipes run in an already plastered wall?

A handheld metal and voltage detector locates live cables and metal pipes to within a few centimetres, which is enough for a design decision. It will not find PPR or PEX pipes carrying cold water, which are effectively invisible to it. For those, the only reliable methods are thermography with hot water in the circuit, or photographs taken before plastering.

What happens if the back box was set 5 cm from the frame?

It depends on whether the wall is still open. With the wall open, the box and its run move the same day at near zero cost. With the wall finished, the fitter has two options: skip the anchor at the box and compensate with an extra one above and below, if the geometry allows, or open locally. The first is only acceptable if at least three anchors remain per jamb.

Can cables run inside the aluminium frame profile?

Not through the structural profile. The extrusion has internal chambers sized for rigidity and for the hinge mechanism, not for services, and a cable pushed in there blocks hinge adjustment on all three axes. For accessories that genuinely need power, such as perimeter LED profiles, the run enters from the side, outside the anchor zone, through a channel provided at the factory on request.
