The answer depends almost entirely on what is hidden under the finish. A filomuro door built correctly, with an extruded aluminium frame and a stable core, stays flat for years. What exposure a bathroom door actually faces
A bathroom door does not sit in water. The real exposure is to high relative humidity (often 70-90% during a shower), to warm vapour that condenses on cold surfaces, and to repeated wet-dry cycles. The bathroom-facing side absorbs the steam, while the hallway side stays dry. This difference in moisture between the two faces is exactly what warps an unstable door: the material absorbs water on one side, expands asymmetrically, and the leaf bows.

In short, the differences between materials in a bathroom are:
- HDF and MDF behave the worst: they swell visibly within 2-4 years, especially along the bottom edge where condensation collects.
- Solid timber resists better but moves seasonally and needs the finish refreshed so it does not crack.
- Honeycomb cardboard fails mechanically and softens, unsuitable for a wet room.
- An extruded aluminium frame combined with a mineral wool core stays dimensionally stable, whatever steam the shower produces.
Why the extruded aluminium frame makes the difference
Extruded aluminium does not absorb water. Its expansion under humidity is zero, and under temperature swings it stays negligible across the length of a door. That means the perimeter frame and concealed frame keep their geometry no matter how much steam the shower makes. The leaf stays flat, the reveal even, and the concealed hinges work without friction or binding.

Which finish to choose for a bathroom filomuro door
Even with a stable structure, the finish must close the surface against vapour. The recommendations for a bathroom are:
- A water-based washable paint, matt or satin, with a declared moisture resistance, applied in even coats.
- An isolating primer on all faces and all edges, not just the front, because vapour enters precisely at the edges.
- Sealing of the bottom and top edges, the zones most exposed to condensation.

- Threshold or no threshold: it can be installed without a threshold, with an air gap under the leaf; if the bathroom floor sits lower, a discreet threshold is added.
- Ventilation: a bathroom without proper ventilation damages any door, regardless of material. A vent or fan keeps humidity below the critical level.
Part of the durability comes down to use. Periodic maintenance, wiping condensation and checking the silicone bead once a year noticeably extend the lifespan.
Can a filomuro door be installed in a bathroom with a shower?
Yes, if the door has an extruded aluminium frame and a moisture-resistant finish. The door separates the bathroom from the hallway and never touches the shower water directly, only the steam. With proper ventilation and sealing at installation, it works without issue for years.
Does a filomuro door swell from steam?
