




Sliding vs hinged filomuro door: which one to choose
The question comes up on almost every project with narrow hallways or small bathrooms: if we are fitting an invisible door anyway, would it not be better to have it slide into the wall? The answer rests on three measurable things, not on preference: how many square metres of clearance you gain, how many decibels you lose, and what happens to the wall the pocket goes into. Below are the numbers for each, with the scenarios where each system is the right call.
The two systems, briefly and technically
A hinged filomuro door has an extruded aluminium perimeter frame embedded in the wall, a leaf that closes flush with the finish, and concealed hinges adjustable on three axes. The frame profile measures 75 mm across the wall thickness, plus a 30 mm border on each face so the skim coat runs on continuously. The leaf swings outside the opening, through 90 or 180 degrees.
A pocket sliding door works on an entirely different principle: a metal cassette (controtelaio) built into the wall structure, into which the leaf disappears sideways on a top track. Horizontally the pocket takes up roughly the leaf width plus 50 to 100 mm, and through the thickness it consumes practically the whole wall: what remains is a sandwich of thin boards on each face, through which no services can be run.
Both can be flush in the strict sense, meaning both can sit level with the wall. The difference is not aesthetic but structural, and it shows up in performance.

Read as prose, the table says the slider buys circulation space at the cost of acoustics and of a blocked wall, while the hinged door does the opposite. The rest of this article explains each row.
The space you gain is not free
An 800 mm leaf opening through 90 degrees sweeps a quarter circle with an 800 mm radius, roughly 0.5 sq m, and in practice the zone you must keep clear reaches 0.9 sq m once you add the walking route. In a 3 sq m bathroom that matters. In a hallway 1.2 m wide, a door opening into the hall blocks passage while it is open.
Except that space does not disappear, it moves. The sliding pocket consumes a linear metre of wall on which you can no longer mount anything: no socket, no switch, no wall unit, no water or power run. In a small room, free wall is often worth more than the floor area beside the door. Before deciding, it is worth checking where the swing falls: often a simple reversal of the leaf resolves the conflict without any pocket. Acoustics: this is where the tie breaks
A hinged door closes against a continuous frame. The leaf presses on the perimeter seal in the aluminium frame, and the 38-42 mm dense mineral wool core adds the mass that stops sound. The measured panel result is Rw 32-38 dB, and the assembly fitted in a 12.5 cm masonry wall drops only 3-5 dB below the solid wall.
A sliding door cannot do this. The leaf enters the pocket sideways, so it cannot press against anything on the sliding side; a working gap remains vertically, plus the clearance under the leaf and the void at the top where the track sits. Realistic values for a correctly fitted sliding system are Rw 20-26 dB, the level at which a conversation next door stays intelligible. For a dressing room or a pantry that is irrelevant. For a bedroom next to the living room, or a home office, it is the difference between working and not working.
A gap of 10-14 dB looks small written down. On the logarithmic scale of sound, every 10 dB means perceptually half the noise.
The wall decides more often than preference does
A sliding system needs a wall that can be hollowed out. That means plasterboard on metal studs, or a non load-bearing masonry wall that can be taken down and rebuilt around the pocket. In a load-bearing concrete or structural brick wall, the pocket has no place without a structural design, and in most flats those are exactly the walls that separate the rooms.
The hinged door has no such constraint. The aluminium frame is anchored with plugs directly into the material in masonry, or into a secondary UA stud structure in plasterboard. The second filter is thickness. Below 100 mm of finished wall the hinged filomuro frame does not fit, and the sliding pocket has its own thresholds, generally 105-125 mm depending on the manufacturer. Check on the finished wall, not the bare one: render and skim add 10-12 mm per face. What happens after five years
A hinged door has two or three concealed hinges, adjustable on three axes. When the leaf drops a few tenths of a millimetre, an Allen key recovers it in two minutes without touching the wall. The perimeter reveal stays at about 3 mm on the sides, and the extruded aluminium frame moves less than 0.5 mm seasonally, unlike HDF which shifts by 1-1.5 mm.
A sliding system has a track, carriages with bearings, a floor guide and stops. All of them wear, and site dust speeds the process up. Adjustment is still made at the carriages, but if a bearing fails or the track deforms, the repair means stripping the wall lining. On a door used dozens of times a day, the difference in service life between the two systems is real and gets paid for at the second repair.
When to choose each system
A pocket slider makes sense in three clear cases: a bathroom or pantry where swing clearance physically does not exist, a separation between two zones that stay open most of the time anyway, or a plasterboard wall built from scratch where the pocket can be designed in. In all three the acoustic requirement is small or absent.
The hinged filomuro remains the default for bedrooms, offices, children's rooms and any door separating a rest zone from an active one. Likewise for any load-bearing wall and any wall where you need sockets, switches or wall-hung furniture. Can a sliding door be made to look flush?
Yes, the leaf can be finished exactly like the wall and can slide into a concealed pocket, so visually the result is close. What cannot be replicated is the perimeter seal, because on the sliding side the leaf presses against nothing. You get the appearance, not the acoustic performance.
How much space does a sliding door actually save?
For an 800 mm leaf, the area freed in front of the door is about 0.5 sq m geometrically and roughly 0.9 sq m in practice, once you count the route that must stay clear. In exchange, 850-900 mm of wall is blocked horizontally, over the full height, where no services can pass.
Can a sliding pocket go into a load-bearing wall?
Not without a structural design and structural work, because hollowing the wall through its thickness would cancel its load-bearing role. In ordinary flats the walls between rooms are frequently load-bearing, and this is the most common reason a slider drops out of the discussion at the survey stage.
Which system costs more once installed?
For a comparable finish, the slider comes out more expensive overall, because the pocket, the rebuilding of the wall around it and the sliding gear are added to the price of the leaf. The gap widens if the wall already exists and has to be opened up. With a hinged door, the extra cost over a classic door lies only in the frame and in the precision of the installation.
