What to ask before ordering a filomuro flush door

A filomuro door only becomes visible once it is installed and skimmed. Until then you are buying on the manufacturer's word, and the differences that actually matter, the frame, the core, the hidden jamb, the tolerances, are exactly the ones photographs never show. Below are eight checks anyone can run, each with the correct answer and the red flag.

Why these questions matter more than the price

Two invisible doors with the same price on paper can be built in completely different ways. One has an extruded aluminium perimeter frame and a mineral wool core, the other an HDF frame and a honeycomb cardboard core. The first stays straight for ten years, the second twists after the first heating season. The evidence shows up in the perimeter reveal: if it widens on one side and closes on the other, the leaf has moved.

The second reason is about execution. With a flush door, an ordering mistake cannot be hidden behind a bead of trim. There is no architrave to cover an opening measured wrong or a jamb set out of plumb. That is why the questions below belong before the deposit, not after delivery.

1. The perimeter frame material

The frame is the skeleton of the leaf. Solid timber or HDF absorbs moisture and moves with the season. Extruded aluminium stays dimensionally stable whatever the humidity in the house. The wording of the answer matters. "Metal frame" says nothing: folded sheet is also metal, but it lacks the rigidity of an extruded profile. Ask for the profile section, not the adjective.

2. The core of the leaf

The core delivers the acoustic performance and the mass of the door. Honeycomb cardboard is cheap and light, but a honeycomb door sounds hollow and stops very little noise. A practical showroom test that needs no instrument: tap the middle of the leaf with a finger. A solid sound means a solid core. A drum sound means honeycomb.

3. The hidden jamb: included or billed separately

This is where the budget surprise usually appears. Some quotes make the door look 150 euro cheaper, then add the hidden jamb at the end for 160 to 300 euro. 4. Sizes and accepted tolerances

A filomuro door is made to order, so the question is not what sizes you keep in stock, but what tolerance you accept on the wall opening. A serious manufacturer gives you a figure in millimetres, not a vague reassurance. If your opening is 2 cm out between top and bottom, that has to be said before production, not discovered on installation day.

Ask for four numbers in writing, not one: the nominal opening size, the leaf size, the outer jamb size and the accepted tolerance.

5. Installation and the perimeter skim

Installing an invisible door is nothing like hanging a conventional one. The jamb is fixed into the wall, aligned on two axes, then the surrounding area is skimmed until the wall to jamb transition disappears. The right question is not whether they install, but whether the perimeter skim is part of their labour or a job for your plasterer.

Either arrangement is fine, but it has to be settled in advance. Otherwise you end up in the classic standoff where the fitter says the skim is the plasterer's job and the plasterer says he does not touch someone else's jamb.

6. The real lead time, from order to installed door

Made to order means a firm date, not an approximate two to three weeks. Ask for the estimated delivery date in the quote, then ask separately how long scheduling the installation takes after delivery. 7. Plasterboard walls against masonry

In masonry the jamb anchors directly. In plasterboard it needs additional steel framing behind the boards, installed before the wall is closed. If the wall is already boarded and skimmed, that framing has to be cut in, which costs more and leaves more joints to repair.

8. The hardware included in the price

Concealed hinges and the lock are functional parts, the handle is a finishing part. At Kulttur the concealed hinges, adjustable on three axes, are included. The handle is chosen separately, because it changes the whole reading of a surface that is otherwise continuous.

Ask about adjustment explicitly: a filomuro door has to be adjustable on three axes after installation, because walls settle and the reveal changes over the first months.

What to ask for in writing before paying the deposit

A good quote fits on one page and contains numbers, not adjectives. The reasonable minimum:

• Frame and core material, written explicitly
• The four sizes: opening, leaf, outer jamb, accepted tolerance
• What the price includes: jamb, hinges, lock, handle where relevant
• Estimated delivery date and a separate installation lead time
• Who executes the perimeter skim and who answers for the finish

If the supplier gives you all five without hesitating, you are dealing with a manufacturer who knows their own product. If they dodge two of them, get another quote.

Can I order before I know the wall colour?

Yes, if you choose the Minimal model, which arrives unfinished and is painted on site together with the wall. For Signature, factory painted, you need the RAL code at order stage, because the paint is applied before delivery.

What if the wall opening is not square?

Measure at three points in each direction and report every value, not the average. Small deviations are corrected on installation day through the jamb adjustment. Large ones are made good with mortar before installation, which is a separate job for the builder rather than the door fitter.

Is it worth ordering all the doors at once?

Yes, for two practical reasons. They come from the same batch of profiles and paint, so the shade is identical, and installation happens in a single visit, which lowers labour per door. The shade difference between two orders placed three months apart is visible above all on white.

How long should a serious quoting conversation take?

Twenty minutes, if you arrive with the opening dimensions and the wall type. The eight questions above take five minutes, and the rest of the time goes on finish and colour. Conversations that run past an hour without reaching numbers usually mean the numbers do not exist.

Can I see an installed door before ordering?
