Filomuro door and children: finger protection and locks
A filomuro door looks like a piece of wall: no architrave, no visible hinge, sometimes not even a handle. For an adult that is exactly the point. For a two-year-old it is a surface that moves unexpectedly, has a narrow gap along its full height and can close with its full weight. The good news is that almost every risk can be solved with decisions made at the order stage, without spoiling the look of the door. Below you will find where the danger points are, which solutions exist and which of them must be requested before the leaf goes into production.
Where fingers get caught on a filomuro door
Every swing door has three risk zones. On a door with a concealed frame they look slightly different from a conventional door, and the difference matters when you choose the protection.
- The hinge side. When the door is open, a narrow gap appears between the leaf edge and the frame along the full height. As the leaf closes, the gap shuts again. Because of the leverage, the force in this zone is much higher than the force you push the door with. It is the most dangerous point, precisely because it is the least visible.
- The lock side. Here fingers get caught when the door slams: the child holds a hand on the edge and the leaf swings towards the frame in a draught or pushed by an older sibling. The perimeter reveal of about 3 mm leaves no room for a finger, so the leaf stops directly on the hand.
- Under the leaf. The space between the leaf and the finished floor is usually small, and a crawling child with bare feet can have toes caught when the door moves over them.
With concealed 3D-adjustable hinges the mechanism sits entirely inside the recesses in the frame and the leaf, so there are no protruding parts for a child to grab. The gap on the hinge side remains, however, as on any door that rotates.
Why the weight of the leaf matters
A filomuro leaf is not a hollow door. The extruded aluminium perimeter frame and the mineral wool core make it more rigid and better at sound insulation, but also heavier. A Signature leaf of 800 × 2100 mm weighs around 28-35 kg. For an adult that weight only feels like a firm close. For a child's finger caught in the gap, the difference between a 15 kg door and a 30 kg one is very large.
Most of the time the door is not slammed by someone but by a draught: an open bedroom window, a balcony door, a strong cooker hood. The leaf starts moving on its own and picks up speed over the last degrees of travel. That is why effective protection is not about warning the child, but about controlling the leaf's speed at the end and holding it open when it should stay open.
Five protection solutions compared
Some solutions can be fitted at any time, others must be decided before production because they require routing in the leaf or the frame. The table below compares them on the criteria that matter in a home with small children.
| Solution | Risk covered | Visibility | Can be added after fitting | Indicative cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Foam anti-slam clip | Full closing on the lock side | Visible, temporary | Yes, no tools | EUR 3-10 |
| Hinge-side finger guard | Fingers in the hinge-side gap | Visible along full height | Yes, with adhesive | EUR 12-40 |
| Magnetic floor door stop | Slamming from a draught | Small, on the floor | Yes | EUR 15-50 |
| Magnetic lock with bathroom turn | Child locked inside | Only the turn rose | No, routed at order stage | Small surcharge |
| Built-in soft-close damper | Sudden closing, fingers on the lock side | Invisible when closed | No, decided at order stage | Quoted on order |
Values are indicative, for the part itself, without fitting. In short, the role of each one:
- The foam clip sits on the leaf edge and stops the door from closing completely. It is cheap and effective in the early years, but it is a visible object on a door designed to disappear, so treat it as a temporary solution.
- The hinge-side guard covers the gap that opens when the door is open. There are textile and flexible profile versions. They are stuck to the frame and the leaf, so pay attention to the finish (details below).
- The magnetic stop holds the door open at the chosen angle. A door that stays firmly open cannot slam in a draught.
- The magnetic lock with bathroom turn allows locking from inside but opens from outside with a coin or a screwdriver. The child cannot lock themselves in without a way out.
- The soft-close damper catches the leaf in the last degrees of travel, brakes it and pulls it gently into the frame. Slamming disappears, and a finger left on the edge gets slow pressure instead of a blow.
The hinge side: the gap you do not notice
On a conventional door, the hinge-side gap is partly hidden by the architrave and the hinge body. On a filomuro door nothing masks it, which makes it more visible to an adult but just as tempting for a child who explores every slot with their fingers.
The safest protection is a finger guard, a flexible strip fixed to the frame and the leaf that covers the gap along the full height. On a filomuro door, keep two things in mind:
- The finish. On a Signature leaf painted in a RAL colour or on a matt painted wall, strong adhesive can pull off the paint when removed. Choose removable adhesive versions and test first on a hidden area, for example the top edge of the leaf. On an unpainted Minimal leaf, fit the guard only after painting and full drying.
- The opening angle. Concealed hinges allow a wide rotation. A guard fitted for 90° can tear if the door swings well beyond that. Combined with a stop at 90-100°, the problem disappears.
The guard is a solution for the years when the child is small. When it is no longer needed it comes off, and the door returns to its original look if the adhesive was chosen correctly.
Locking in children's rooms
The rule is simple: in a child's room and in the bathroom, fit nothing that locks without a way to open it from outside. A key cylinder in a child's bedroom is a problem waiting to happen: the key stays in the lock on the inside, the door closes, and opening it means forcing a door with an aluminium frame.
For filomuro doors there are two suitable options, both with a retractable latch that only comes out opposite the strike plate:
- Plain magnetic lock for young children's rooms. It holds the door closed but does not lock at all.
- Magnetic lock with bathroom turn for the bathroom and for older children who want privacy. The outside release works with a coin or a flat screwdriver through the slot in the rose.
The lock type is routed into the leaf and the frame at the factory and cannot easily be changed on site. All options are explained in the guide to magnetic, bathroom or key locks. It is worth thinking 10-15 years ahead: today's nursery will be a teenager's room tomorrow.
Handleless and push doors: easy to open for anyone
A push system opens with a simple press on the leaf. For an adult with full hands that is convenient. For a child who has just learned to walk it means the door opens at the first touch, without reaching any handle. A handle is usually fitted at 100-105 cm from the finished floor, above the reach of a one- or two-year-old, whereas a push latch responds anywhere on the leaf.
For bedrooms and living rooms this is rarely an issue. For a cupboard with cleaning products, a plant room or a walk-in wardrobe with large mirrors, a door that opens at any touch is not the right choice in a home with small children. There, a slim handle or a push latch combined with a bolt is safer. The pros and limits of each system are covered in the article on the handleless filomuro door.
Soft closing and the door stop: the two parts that matter most
If you could choose only two measures, they would be the damper and the stop. Together they cover almost every real finger-trapping situation.
- The soft-close damper is built into the top rail of the frame and only works on the last part of the travel. It does not resist opening, so a child can open the door normally. It is decided at the order stage because it requires routing in the frame and the leaf.
- The magnetic floor stop holds the door open until you close it on purpose. It is fitted at about two thirds of the leaf width, measured from the hinge side, and the leaf stops at 90-100°. The correct position and fixing on each floor type are described in the guide to the door stop for a filomuro door.
A closer that returns the door to the frame from any angle is not desirable in children's rooms. It resists opening, and a small child cannot hold the door open with one hand and walk through with the other. For a home, a damper at the end of the travel is enough.
What to request at the order stage if you have small children
Most protections can be added after fitting, but the invisible ones are decided before production. A short list to check with your consultant:
- a soft-close damper on the doors of children's rooms, the bathroom and draughty hallways;
- a plain magnetic lock or a bathroom turn, no key cylinder in children's rooms;
- a conventional or slim handle, not push, on the cupboard, plant room and walk-in wardrobe;
- an opening direction chosen so that the leaf does not swing into the main play area;
- the stop position decided together with the opening direction, not after moving in.
Can fingers get caught in the concealed hinges of a filomuro door?
The hinge mechanism sits entirely inside the recesses in the frame and the leaf, so it does not trap fingers directly. The real risk is the hinge-side gap, which opens when the door is open and closes as it shuts. A finger guard with removable adhesive covers it while the child is small.
Which lock is right for a child's room?
For young children, a plain magnetic lock that holds the door closed without locking. For older children, a magnetic lock with a bathroom turn that can be released from outside with a coin. A key cylinder has no place in a child's room.
Can I add finger protection after fitting?
Yes, for foam clips, hinge-side guards and door stops, which can be fitted at any time. The built-in soft-close damper and the lock type, however, are routed at the factory, so they must be requested when ordering. Afterwards, only a surface-mounted closer can be added, visible on the leaf.
Is a handleless filomuro door safe for small children?
A push system is not dangerous in itself, but it opens at any press on the leaf, including the touch of a one-year-old. In bedrooms and living rooms that is not a problem. On a cupboard, plant room or walk-in wardrobe in a home with small children, a handle at 100-105 cm or a push latch with a bolt is safer.
Does a soft-close damper stop the door from slamming completely?
The damper brakes the leaf over the last degrees of travel and pulls it gently into the frame, so the door can no longer hit the frame at speed, not even in a draught. It does not hold the door open, though. For that you need a magnetic stop, and the combination of the two covers almost every situation.
If you are fitting out a home with small children, protections are easiest to discuss before ordering, while every option is still possible.
